If you’ve been watching my Instagram stories you’d know I was testing keto pigs in blanket recipes this entire weekend. As a kid, pigs in a blanket were some of my favourite treats. I never ate them as often as I wanted to, but they have always had a special place in my heart – those and sausage rolls. Yum. This recipe is a spin-off of the classic fathead dough. Luckily, I’ve made this dough lower calorie and lower fat than normal fathead dough. So now, you can enjoy more keto pigs in a blanket with much less guilt.
Before coming up with this recipe, I tried some of the popular keto pigs in a blanket recipes online. To me, a soft dough with a bite makes the perfect dough. I found that the first recipe I tried was gritty, and I wasn’t a fan. This was due to the fact that cream cheese was omitted completely to lower calories and fat macros. The second recipe I tried was a cheesy overload. The dough tasted too much like cheese and was quite soft. While both keto pigs in a blanket recipes were edible I was determined to make a dough that was both soft but had a bite.
I experimented with this dough about 3 times. I found that this dough works best when it has been rolled out and wrapped around the hotdogs. While this method is slightly different than traditional pigs in a blanket, it does contribute to a lower carb count. Having a lower carb count on a ketogenic diet is always a good thing, so I can’t complain. I like to refer to these keto pigs in a blanket to pigs in a thong.
Tips for Success
I used regular Great Value Original Wieners for this recipe. The great thing about Great Value is that they have pork hot dogs, chicken hotdogs, and beef hot dogs. So regardless of your dietary preferences you can try and make these keto pigs in a blanket. I paid $5 for a pack of 24 and I couldn’t complain. If you have Lil Smokies, or those mini spicy sausages those would go great with this recipe as well.
This dish is also an amazing keto appetizer to bring to any event. My non-keto family members loved these and they made quite a dent in my stash. This keto appetizer also freezes well. Don’t be afraid to make some in advance and free them for later use.
In a typical Sarah-Jane fashion, I’d recommend having these with some Cherry Diet Coke.
